The great handmade books, objects of art as well as enlightenment, express the spirit of their owners and the faith and aspirations of those who created them. Each of these treasures are unique.
Among this collection of time-travelers is an even smaller select few that have survived despite the vicissitudes of time and history. These cherished Hebrew manuscripts, along with their owners, have wandered from place to place. Great libraries and renowned museums are now a permanent home for these precious volumes.
It is this tradition which informs my work. Using medieval and Renaissance techniques forgotten for hundreds of years, I continue on the path of the creators of those golden pages and miniature worlds.
For an artist working in this technique, every brushstroke is a point of focus in a tiny universe and painting takes on a meditative quality. It becomes a spiritual journey in an intimate landscape. As an artist with lifelong experience portraying the natural world, these paintings allow me to acknowledge the divine in nature.
